BIRD SPIKES Installation Guide

Install BIRD SPIKES correctly for a durable, professional finish that prevents birds from landing or nesting.

Before You Start

Phase 1: Preparation

Measure your area

  • Work out the total length required in meters.
  • The minimum order quantity for BIRD SPIKES is 10 metres.
  • Placement will vary depending on whether the surface has a back wall or is open.

Clean the surface thoroughly

  • The surface must be clean, dry, and free of debris.
  • Use hot soapy water, a brush, and gloves.
  • Wear a dust mask when cleaning dry bird droppings.

Choose the correct fixing method

  • Polyurethane adhesive, recommended:
    • Strong, permanent bond.
    • UV-resistant and weatherproof.
    • Flexible, so it will not crack with temperature changes.
    • Suitable for most surfaces including concrete, metal, and stone.
  • Do not use silicone: it degrades in sunlight and loses adhesion over time.
  • Gutter clips: for gutters.
  • Removable clips: for temporary setups.
  • Cable ties: for pipes, railings, and curved surfaces.
  • Screws, rivets, or nails: for mechanical fixing through base holes.

Phase 2: Installation

Apply polyurethane adhesive

  • Using a caulking gun, apply a consistent bead, approximately 5 mm, of adhesive along the base of the BIRD SPIKES strip.
  • Ensure the adhesive presses through the holes in the base for a secure bond.
  • One 375 ml tube typically covers approximately 10 meters, depending on application.

Position the BIRD SPIKES

  • Press firmly onto the surface.
  • Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s curing instructions.

Adjust to fit

  • Cut the BIRD SPIKES strip to size as required.
  • Use heavy-duty scissors, tin snips, or side cutters to trim the plastic base easily.
  • Cut between the spike clusters for a neat, clean finish.

Phase 3: Spacing and Placement

Correct spacing is essential for effectiveness.

Open ledges, no back wall

  • One row of BIRD SPIKES protects up to 18 cm width.
  • Centre the BIRD SPIKES.
  • Leave no more than 3 cm exposed on either side.
  • Install strips end-to-end with no gaps.

Ledges with a wall or vertical surface

  • One row of BIRD SPIKES protects up to 15 cm width.
  • Install BIRD SPIKES flush against the wall.
  • Leave no more than 3 cm gap at the front.
  • This prevents birds from bracing against the wall.

Wide surfaces, over 18 cm

  • Use multiple rows of BIRD SPIKES.
  • Space rows so gaps between spike tips are no more than 3 cm.
  • Eliminate all landing zones.

Suitable Installation Areas

  • Ledges and windowsills.
  • Roof tiles and beams.
  • Gutters and downpipes.
  • Pipes and railings.
  • Air-conditioning units and external fixtures.

Key Tips

  • Always install BIRD SPIKES on a clean, dry surface.
  • Keep all gaps under 3 cm to prevent landing.
  • Use polyurethane adhesive for long-term performance.
  • Do not use silicone or low-grade adhesives.
